SPORTS UPDATE TERM 2 – WEEK 1

Welcome to term 2 and all the opportunities it offers to our children and community. We are very fortunate and grateful to be able to do sports on such a wide scale.

In term 2 Torbay School will participate in Netball, Hockey, Flippaball, Newbies Waterpolo, Basketball, Miniball, Little League and Rippa Rugby tournaments.

We have registered 6 Flippaball and Newbies Waterpolo teams in the competition and are waiting for the draw. The games and trainings will start this weekend. Our younger teams are small and would benefit if 2 or 3 more Y2 players could join them, please email Monika if you are interested. Thank you very much to all parents who offered to coach or manage teams.

During the holidays the organisers made some changes to Rippa Rugby. Torbay teams will now play in 2 tournaments (instead of 3). All teams will now play 7-aside (this used to be 10 aside for Y5/6 children). Also our older children (Y5/6) will now play rip rugby instead of rippa rugby. Please click on this link to familiarise yourself with the rules for rip rugby: https://www.harbourrugby.co.nz/file/file6080e16d44856/open.

We have pushed the registration deadline back to next Friday 14/5, please register your children on KINDO – if you have registered during the holidays we will credit your account. Rippa rugby is for years 3, 4, 5, and 6 children.

Netball trainings are under way and we look forward to lots of action on netball courts starting this Wednesday 5/5 for our Y6 children and next Saturday 15/5 for everyone else. Huge thank you again to all the parents coaching and managing 12 Torbay teams.

We have a record number of 5 hockey teams for the upcoming winter season. Their trainings will start this week and I would also like to thank everyone who supports Torbay School hockey – you are all very generous with your time and expertise you pass onto our children and for that we are very grateful. THANK YOU!

Little League, Miniball and Basketball continue into term 2 as they are played on a per Semester basis. We have received the draw for the remaining season and you will be able to register for semester 2 (terms 3 and 4) at the end of term 2. The commitment and enthusiasm of our parents is incredible as you can see in this article below about one of our basketball teams and their player of the day handcrafted trophy:

The Torbay Space Jam basketball team have been competing in the 2021 Basketball season at Browns Bay Leisure Centre this year. Early in the season the Player of the Day trophy suffered a catastrophic disaster, and despite several attempts to resurrect it, sadly it had to be retired.

In stepped Paul Brunton, father of Dylan, with his talented woodworking skills and ideas to make a new and improved Player of the Day trophy for the team that looks amazing and will survive just about anything that is thrown at it! The boys are all very proud of their new trophy, and it is hotly contested each week.
