IMPORTANT DATES AND EVENTS

Torbay School Learning Powers – RIC

DEAR PARENTS

Tēnā koutou

Welcome back to school. High winds, rain and bright sunshine. We have had it all this week, however this has not dampened the spirits of staff and children. The school is busy and alive and at last has more of a sense of normalcy about it than I have felt for some time.

There is much planned for the term starting with Matariki celebrations next week. We look forward to you joining our staff and children for the various breakfasts that have been planned throughout the school.

Our Whānau Feedback evenings will be held in week 3 on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday the 5th of August given that our school year has been interrupted so dramatically our Whānau Feedback meetings will be focused initially on children’s wellbeing.  Our period in “covid lock down” has emphasised how important the soft skills represented at Torbay School by our Learner Powers and Care values are.

Whānau Feedback conversations will be focused initially on a simple self-assessment that the children will be doing prior to the meeting with the teachers. Following that, conversation will flow into achievement within other curriculum areas, however, with our severely interrupted year and our focus on the wellbeing of our children we have only a small amount of data to base those discussions on.

We look forward to seeing you at our Whānau Feedback evenings, it is not compulsory for children to attend the meetings. Meetings are 15 minutes long and please utilise our creche for siblings. Our crèche is located in the Library.

We have a Teacher only day planned for the 28th of August and thank you for making alternative plans for your children’s care on that day. This will be followed up by another Teacher only day in term 4 on the 27th of October. Both of these days are taken from the days allocated to us by the government in the last collective agreement and are also being taken by the other primary schools in our Kāhui Ako on the same days.

I was pleased to attend the PTA meeting last night. The meeting was well attended and it was great to see this terrific group of people together again planning events for our school. I urge you to become involved with the PTA if you have the time to spare.

All sports are now back in action and Monika Benkovic is working furiously to ensure that every child that wants to get onto the court, the field or in the pool. I look forward to watching the children play their various sports. I also look forward to our school cross country day on Friday the 14th of August.

We also hold our annual book fair in week 3. This is an opportunity to build up the number of children’s books in your home and support the school at the same time. It will be set up in the foyer all week and you are invited to view and purchase books for your children.

I thank you for your continued cooperation around our morning and afternoon protocols. It has made a significant difference to the school, particularly in the mornings where children are settling much faster.

At this time of year more people use their car to bring children to school. In the first instance I urge you to walk your children to school or allow them to walk if they are old enough. Failing that the walking school bus is an option and we would love to see the walking school bus expand to new routes and grow in numbers. If you have to bring your car then I thank you for ensuring that this is done safely. Please do not double park and drop your children outside the school gate. Please do not leave your car unattended in the drop off zone. Please do not park in the middle of the road to wait for access to the drop off zone and please consider safety and others at all times around our school.

On Friday the 31st of July our builders are planning to pour the first stage of the floor of our new building and will need continued access through the Deep Creek Rd Carpark. Please keep the area clear at drop off and pick up times as there will be concrete trucks arriving and departing throughout the day.

Progress on our building is going very well. It is very exciting to see the plans starting to take shape in the ground and I look forward to seeing the structure rise up out of the ground.

Thank you for your continued support for everything we do at Torbay School. Please do not hesitate to contact me on any issue.
