MEET THE PEOPLE

Name:                        Wendy Sandifer

Welcome!  I have been the Principal of Torbay School since January 2007. Prior to this I taught at a variety of schools on the North Shore and within the Bay of Plenty.  My most recent schools were Glenfield Intermediate (Year 7 & 8) and Pinehill School (Years 1-6).

My belief and interest in Lifelong Learning has meant that I have continued to study by adding a Bachelor of Education and a Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Administration to my original qualifications.  Currently, I am interested in the areas of personalised learning, developing sustainable leadership and integrating the curriculum.

I live locally with my husband and two teenagers.  I have had a long association with the school as both our children attended Torbay School.  In my spare time I enjoy sporting activities, reading, travelling and spending time with my family.

Teaching level:            Year1 & 2

Hi I’m Colleen..

My roles in the school are as a classroom teacher, leader of the Junior Syndicate and Associate Principal with responsibility for curriculum across the school.

All of my own children have been students of Torbay so I have a long association with the school and have witnessed many exciting changes and developments.

I am still very passionate about my teaching and still my favourite part in this role is my association with the children. There is nothing more rewarding than the response of children to learning and the smiles they bring to school because being in your classroom is fun. So I really try to make being at school a happy and positive place to be.

I also value the role of parents in education and rate the communication with parents as paramount.

I am excited about the shift we have made at Torbay to involve students in learning conversations with their parents. I believe that children taking responsibility for their learning at an early age will engage them in becoming life-long learners.

Teaching level:              Year 4

Hi, I’m Katie. Together with Marion Hutton we teach  fantastic year 4 children in room 16.  I like teaching all subjects but my favourite subject is environmental education.  That is when we get to use our inquiring minds to look at how to improve our school environment.  Last year we painted drains around the school and this year we are looking at painting drains at Waiake beach.

As well as teaching, I am responsible for the resources in our school.   I look after all the computer equipment and make sure it all works.  I  also lead the year 3 and 4 syndicate.  I am responsible for managing and coaching rippa rugby teams, the chess teams and support the kapa haka and enviro group.

I live in Albany with my husband and our four children.  In my spare time I love to garden, scrapbook, jetski, swim and go sailing on our boat.

Being passionate about learning and supporting children to meet their potential is the key to my role as classroom teacher and Associate Principal for pastoral care at Torbay School. This encompasses supporting children with learning needs, English as  a second language and extending children with special abilities. Find what children are passionate about and you have the key to their learning. As a life long learner myself I have a thirst for new ideas and learning.

I also lead the Year 5 and 6 syndicate and have a great team of teachers that provide a variety of programmes to enhance and support learning and our vision of “Flying High For a Successful Future”.

Teaching level:            All levels - Classroom Release Teacher

I have been on the staff at Torbay School since 1998, beginning as a first year teacher in the junior area of the school, followed by three years in the middle school and five years teaching in the senior syndicate.

I  release teachers and take all classes across the school for a skills based Art programme and Dance and Drama.  This is a one off, one year position for me to develop my own interest in The Arts and it is my intention to work on art projects that involve the whole school and enhance our environment.

My responsibilities in the school are working as a member of the Maths, Arts and Inquiry teams as well as the staff representative on the Board of Trustees, a position I have now held for 5 years.
